The occasion of Palmerston’s 150th anniversary and Homecoming in 2025 seemed the ideal time to temporarily resurrect the Palmerston Observer. With a volunteer team comprised mostly of former Observer staff members and contributors, the aim of this project is to produce a commemorative issue of the newspaper for the Homecoming weekend in August 2025.
This special “Redux Edition” of the Observer will be printed and available prior to the Homecoming celebrations, taking place on August 1-4, 2025. Inspired by the special 1975 centennial issue of the Observer published for the occasion of Palmerston’s 100th birthday, this revived Palmerston Observer will take a slightly different approach. Rather than duplicating the extensive historical coverage published in the 1975 special issue, this 2025 edition will focus on the period from Palmerston’s centennial year through to present day, examining the progress and significant events that took place and how the town looks today.
Precise details are still being finalized but we will be printing this summer with copies available prior to the Homecoming weekend in August. Along with a growing editorial and production team, this project is supported by the Palmerston Homecoming Committee and the Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum.
This is a non-profit venture. Outside of our sponsor support, we chose to not solicit advertising so as to not compete with active businesses currently publishing newspapers in the Palmerston area. This is a one-time project and our financial goal is to cover print, production and distribution expenses only; any excess revenue will be donated to the Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum after publication.
